Here's Eric staring at my head, hat and/or beard. My paintings hang on the wall above us.

A good action photo utilizing Jon Schnepp and Eric's paintings. I chose the Power Cosmic. I am a herald of Galactus.

Bob Okazaki took this picture. He is also in this picture - along with myself, Shannon and Eric.

We had to compose a paragraph describing our art in the show. This is the one for my paintings:

What is it!?! A giant naked lady. Oh yeah. She is eating the monster. He like a Kaiju monster. I love Godzilla style monsters = awesome. I love King Kong Escapes the most. I saw Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 16mm print projected at the public library when I was a tiny child. I also love a naked lady. Especially she is a giant. Giant = better. A giant monster eats the lady too. There are two: 1) Giant lady eats smaller monster in Tokyo. 2) Giant monster eats smaller lady in San Francisco. Both cultures, equal measures. They call it "fusion." I can dig it. I'm ANIMERICAN.

"I'm Animerican" paintings

Here's some documentation of the paintings I did for a group show called "I'm Animerican."

The theme was the fusion of Japanese and American culture through the influence of Japanese Anime. It's up now at a place called Royal T in Culver City. It's a pretty bad ass gallery/store/japanese maid cafe: http://www.royal-t.org/ The opening was huge. It was curated by Eric Calderon. Apparently, he knows how to throw a good party. Booze+Karaoke+Weird Paintings+Japanese Girls in Maid Outfits=Awesome. I'll post or link to some pictures of the show eventually...

Anyways, here's what I painted....

I did 2 pieces. 2'x2' each, Acrylic on wood. They were called:

"Giant lady eats smaller monster in Tokyo"
and
"Giant monster eats smaller lady in San Francisco."

Here they are before hanging in the show...

This is the drawing stage. I start with light pencil, then firm it up with a Sharpie. Shannon posed for the lady. See the Burne Hogarth knee reference to the left...

Then I rock the grayscale "painting." I've found that using Copic/Prismacolor gray markers and sharpies makes this process go very quickly. Most of the time I'm doing these the night before the show, so I need to work fast!

I paint over the grayscale version with acrylic, then finish it up with gloss medium.

Another half-assed attempt

Well, I'm thinking I'm going to try to give this blog another go. It's been about a year and a half since the last post.

I've been doing some fine art painting recently. The work has appeared in some group shows and stuff. I'm in a few more upcoming group shows. One ROM tribute and one with an anime theme.

The latest show I was in was "Gag Me With A Toon 2" at Meltdown Gallery in LA. The theme was Saturday morning cartoons from the 80's. I've posted some pics of my painting from that one. It sold to producer Don Murphy of Natural Born Killers fame.

It's called "Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels" based on the cartoon of the same name. The premise is something like this: What if a bunch of teenage girls really found a frozen caveman and thawed him out and asked him to drive around with them in a van and solve mysteries? Well, He probably would not understand what they were saying and lash out like Travis the chimp and fuck everyone up. This painting depicts the moment right before the authorities move on the good Captain. It's not his fault, he's a damn caveman.

First, the drawing. It's two feet high by four feet wide on wood. My wife, Shannon, posed for the dead teenagers:

Goat

There has been some speculation on the internet about the "Goat" animated character. He is indeed a real person. The characters from Downtown, Megas XLR and Metalocalypse are all the same Goat. The real Goat did his own voice for Downtown and Megas. His voice was done by James Hetfield of Metallica for Metalocalypse. In addition to being forced into doing cartoon voices, he is a tattoo artist located in Jersey City. Dethtroll Design

Here's the rough design I did for the Dethtroll. He's in episode 4 of the first season of Metalocalypse. James Hetfield of Metallica did the voice (which was pretty much just screaming into the mic.) As you can see, he's approximately "8 Nathan Explosions tall." In the actual episode he ranged from this height to probably about 20 Nathans tall. Whatever worked for the scene. The design was supposed to invoke 80's metal album cover art. I used to draw this kind of shit on all my high school notebooks. I was the guy who would paint demons on the stoners' jean jackets.

We're working on the special features for the Metalocalypse dvd right now and writing for the second season has begun (another 20 episodes.) Brendon's working hard finishing up the album and it looks like we're going to do a full length music video for one of the songs. We haven't figured out which one yet. I have to say they all sound bad ass. The extended Mermaider gets my vote for now. So look for a bunch more Dethklok stuff this year. Rock on!

If you can read this, I guess this "posting a blog entry" thing worked. neat.

Here is an old sketchbook drawing. I used to draw in sketchbooks a lot. Sometimes I'd paint over the drawings (as in this example). Those were the days. Now I mostly draw on post-its or on a computer screen. Maybe this blog will inspire me to do more "art." probably not.
